Applies to: Reliance System
Everyone needs their own account. If you had an account in the retired Joinder or Online Reliance System, or already have one in the Reliance System, you can sign in with the method on your account; if you are not sure which that is, see Fix a "Login failed" message. If you have never had an account, follow these steps in order — the sign-in choice in step 3 cannot easily be changed later.
Step 1 — Start. Either open the invitation email from your Site Admin and select Create my account, or go to the registration page and select Register.
Step 2 — Your details. Enter your name, work email, phone number, and institution. Use the email you will sign in with. If you work for more than one Participating Institution, register with one and email help@smartirb.org to be associated with the others.
Step 3 — Choose your sign-in method (this matters). You will see three options. Pick the one that matches you; if you pick the wrong one you will be unable to sign in and the SMART IRB and NIH IT teams will have to correct it.
| Choose… | If… |
|---|---|
| Login.gov | Neither of the other two applies. This is the right choice for most people. You will need a Login.gov account registered to the same email as your SMART IRB account (create one at login.gov if you do not have it). |
| InCommon Federation (institutional single sign-on) | Your institution appears in the "Search organization to log in" list on the Reliance System sign-in page. Your SSO email must match your SMART IRB account email. |
| NIH | You are an NIH employee or contractor with an NIH-issued email. |
All three use multi-factor authentication.
Step 4 — Wait for verification. A Site Admin at your institution must verify your account before you can sign in. If your institution is new to SMART IRB and has no Site Admin yet, email help@smartirb.org and the SMART IRB team will activate you.
Step 5 — Sign in at app.smartirb.org using the method you chose.
